Susan Tolis - Creator of Fernwood

“Find joy in the journey”

This is my mantra for life and creative expression.

I am endlessly inspired by nature and the fantasy world.  I am fascinated with the interconnectedness of all living things and imagine that this can be embodied into fantasy creatures who can emerge from the earth, sea or sky and share their unique wisdom with us.  When there are bumps in the road of the journey, perhaps a smiling face or offer of nature’s healing spirit can ease us through.

I call my world “Fernwood”, not only because of the dense patches of ferns growing in my environment but also because I can never help but imagine the magical little world that lies beneath those beautiful fronds.

Trained as a theatrical costume and puppet maker, I use the skills and materials from those crafts to create my own little world of fantasy friends, wearable art or treasures for the home.  I create mostly in polymer clay, but incorporate a variety of other media, materials, and recycled bits and pieces from previous endeavors or the forest floor itself.

There is a wonder of discovering a new friend each time I sculpt a face. Welcome little one, what are you here to share with me?

I welcome commissions and working with others to create a special sculpture.  Please contact me for more information or to schedule a consultation.
